Women's Fashion Forecast...Art-Deco inspired flappers all the rage!

Europe's elite couture houses have turned their fashion sensibilities back to the eclectic - at times whimsical - musings of a fanciful bygone era to rustle up a slew of eye-popping cocktail dresses sure to pump breathy (think Marilyn, dahlinks!) life into the fast-paced nightclub circuit come spring.

For starters,daring designers have been tossing a shimmering spotlight on the notorious femme fatale, and fathomed up an exuberant take on "flappers" and scintillating art-deco flourishes that still have the potent power to dazzle and flatter (provided the sultry babes have the silhouettes to pull the sultry look off, that is).

The vamp is in vogue - and fashionistas with a keen eye for bellweather trends - are jumping all over the threads with gay abandon.

The stand-outs are expected to - not only smolder on the runways - but exalt glamour and style ad they make their merry way through the heady climbs of the International jet-set terrain.

Collections are beyond the pale, and not for the shrinking violets of the world, I'll say.

Confident feminine women - sassy ones, too - will be tripping-the-light-fantastic in chic outfits that boast metallic eye-catching flourishes, echo subtlely etched geometric patterns from the 20's, and a bevy of beauteous beads, feathers, and lace.

Romance is in style once again!

Shirley MacLaine...cast in juicy role on "Downton Abbey"!

Feisty seasoned pro - Shirley MacLaine - is joining the cast of the award-winning PBS mini-series - "Downton Abbey" - according to industry sources over the weekend.

Tattler readers may recall that I raved about the upstairs-downstairs-style period potboiler which has captured the imagination of discriminating audiences both here and across the big pond for two scintillating seasons now.

David Letterman...on the rag about elusive exclusive hunk Brad Pitt!

At the top of the Late Show last night, it was pretty obvious to Paul Shaffer, that his boss was down in the proverbial dumper.

"It's that Brad Pitt," Dave grumbled, as avid fans in the stands below the footlights edged closer in their seats.

Uh-huh!

The popular comic was allegedly in a deep funk over the fact the high-profile Oscar-nominated hunk had consistently nixed his invites to trot down to the studio at the Ed Sullivan Theater to chat up insightful inquisitive (probing?) Dave at old CBS.

Ah, maybe that was it in a nutshell.

"He probably thinks I'll be cooler than he is," Letterman cackled with glee, as the audience roared their approval from the great beyond.

"It's probably his wife, Angelina Jolie, who is to blame," he conjectured, almost as an afterthought.

"I probably said something that insulted her last time she appeared on the show," Dave mused.

Bottom line?

Dave's written Pitt off as a potential guest in the future.

"He hates me," Letterman lamented ruefully.

Apparently, Pitt put in a much-ballyhooed appearance on the quirky John Daly show (which tapes on a sound stage on the same lot just a hop-and-a-skip away).

"He could have killed two birds with one stone," Dave quipped.

"Once he finished up over there, he could have stopped by here," he griped.

"Would you want him after," Paul snapped back pointedly.

Ugh!

Sloppy seconds!

If it were moi, no way, Jose.

"Maybe he belongs on a cable show," Dave concluded with a smug look of satisfaction on his face.

"I mean, what has he done? He's not a really big star, is he?"

I expect that an obvious dig like that will push the heartthrob away!

Heh, I'm available, Dave (hint hint).

If Pitt has a sense of humor - in addition to truckloads of sex appeal - just maybe he'll play along.

Then again, maybe not!

After all, you can lead a stud to water, but you can't make him drink.

I was channel-surfing last night when I stumbled on a cable bio on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (?) and caught wind of a "users" quote of the day.

Uh-huh!

When Facebook fans were quizzed about the number of friends they've "nurtured" along on the highly-trafficked web site , one happy-go-lucky member was quick on the uptake and beamed from ear-to-ear.

"I have more friends on Facebook than I do in the real world," he quipped.

Which underscores what critics have been speculating all along.

Friendships struck up on a social hub - sight unseen - hover somewhere between the heady realms of reality, the surreal, wistful thinking, even fantasy!

Personally, when it comes to revving up a relationship with a total stranger, I prefer to rely on the spontaneous chemistry that normally draws two people together naturally in the daily course of events.

Amen!

San Francisco...celebrates Year of Dragon with parade February 11th!

In San Francisco the locals are gearing up for the big parade on the horizon to celebrate Chinese New Year and the triumphant entrance of the mighty Dragon!

Right now is an opportune occasion to take a trek down to Grant Street (the main strip in Chinatown) to marvel at all the preparations underway for what is bound to be one of the social and cultural (political, too, now that Mayor Lee is in power?) highlights of 2012.

Personally, I have always been intrigued by all the ancient traditions - the passing out of embossed red envelopes, the annual dances and rituals to ward off evil spirits, tea sampling, the exotic display of far eastern treasures in quaint storefront windows, merry-makers in delightful costumes, you name it!

Tattler readers may recall that I posted an in-depth feature on the rich historical past of San Francisco's fascinating Chinatown in recent years.

The Iron Lady...Exquisite filmmaking! Meryl Streep's Oscar-calibre performance!

Though I've never been one to follow politics too closely (my primary focus has been on the arts over the years) - and I am quite unfamiliar with the specifics of Margaret Thatcher's stint as England's Prime Minister - there is much I can rave about without hesitation in respect to the just-released screen bio on her life.

For starters, Meryl Streep's performance in "The Iron Lady" is a knock-out bang-on portrayal - a crowning achievement - in a remarkable acting career that has spanned several decades without interruption.

In contrast to her "hammy" caricature of "Julia Child" just a scant few years ago, here, Ms. Streep has managed to breathe life - and flesh out with subtle nuance -aspects of Thatcher's complex multi-faceted persona seamlessly - and seemingly - at whim.

Hers is a performance that is a joy to behold.

Critics are often quick to label an actor's characterization as a "revelation" in a bold-faced effort to single out outstanding play-acting now-and-then on both the stage and silver screen - but, in this instant case - the plaudit rings truer somehow.

At times, it appeared as if the very spirit of Mrs. Thatcher was imbuing the silver screen with her awesome other-worldly presence.

When it comes to filmgoers - with a discerning discriminating eye (keen on delicious detail) - "The Iron Lady" is also a triumph for Weinstein & Company as well.

The cinematography - well - it's stunning.

And, the editing, distinctive and superb!

It's doubtful that the director (Phyllida Lloyd) could ever be capable of turning in a pedestrian approach to set-ups - even with regard to key establishing scenes - so natural and instinctive is her unique spellbinding cinematic style.

Mesmerizing!

"The Iron Lady" is an inspiring peak into the political accomplishments of Britain's first female Prime Minister.

But, beyond the realm of politics, it also hits the mark in respect to a timely medical issue as well.

As moviegoers trot out the theater doors entertained, they are - no doubt - troubled by the prospect of being afflicted with Alzheimer's in their advancing years.

Which begs the question.

Is enough being done in the medical community to find treatments for the debilitating insiduous disease?

Now, the buzz has reared its ugly head, once again.

Handlers are whispering that Seacrest intends to breathe new life into HDNet - the floundering cable entity - and resurrect the rich media outlet into - voila! - a newly-formed entertainment outlet to be known as AXS TV.

The hyper high-profile kid is expected to focus on live! concerts and pop culture bill-of-fare, according to my sources.

Dr. Robert M. Walley...D.D.S. rip-off dentist! Consumers beware of fraud & Deceptive Business Practices!

Well, it's obvious that dentists did not acquire their bad reputations - and mercenary images - for no good reason.

In fact - when it comes to Dr. Robert M. Walley D.D.S. - the word out of the San Francisco Bay area is that poential patients should not only take heed of the old-familiar saying - consumer beware - but run the other way!

After all, Dr. Walley - and his staff in particular - are basically disreputable low-lifes with a license to rip folks off!

You'd think that in these troubling economic times, professionals like Walley - who have the gumption to call themselves "care givers" - would have some compassion on the needy instead of trying to take advantage of their misfortune with the ultimate aim of fleecing 'em in the underhanded process.

According to my sources, Dr. Walley doesn't give a damn about providing professional quality service, one bit.

He and his staff are simply out to line their pockets with their ill-gotten gains at the expense of their unwitting clients.

Notwithstanding, Walley and his gang of merry thieves also routinely engage in fraud and deceptive business practices - and that, too - is shocking in-of-itself.

For example, although patients appear on time for their appointments in good faith, Dr. Wally's staff proceed to treat them dishonestly and unprofessional with an eye on the bottom line only.

In fact, patients have complained that once they set up an appointment for emergency dental work - and settle in to the dentist's chair - Dr. Walley and his disreputable staff move in for the kill.

When a patient notes reveals that a tooth has been broken "up front", for instance, the individual is smooth-talked into proceeding with treatment right away to prevent further complications, infection, and so-forth-and-so-on.

But, when they balk at the prices (one Wally technician pressured a patient to cough up $540 for a partial cleaning in one side of the mouth), Walley proceeds to use a little psychology - and insults the patient - in a deceitful effort to pressure them into springing for the outrageous overpriced dental work.

"You can't go walking around looking like a derelict," he flippantly laments in a nasty tone of voice.

Under the false pretense that the dental staff are actually concerned about the well-being and overall health of the individual, they try to pressure the potential "victim" into writing a check for the full sum in spite of the fact the individual may have insurance.

Uh-huh!

The greedy bastards can't wait to get paid by the Insurance carrier. They want their money upfront right away, no matter what the hardship, for the client.

It was all just a clever ploy to get the injured - who are understandably emotionally-charged and upset under the circumstances - in the door right away so they can start bilking them out of their hard-earned cash without any guilt.

Patients are ushered into an examination room with the understanding that the surgery will commence right away once the X-rays are taken.

Wrong!

Walley and his staff proceed to demand $203.00 (and upwards) for an examination fee and practically boot the sorry soul out of their office on their sorry if they refuse to pay up.

Their actions constitute fraud, after all, since failure to disclose is illegal conduct in the U.S.

And, the list of grievances goes on and on, you betcha!

I say, you can probably get a set of pearly whites elsewhere for half the price.

Amen!

"Gilda"...Rita Hayworth a knock-out in flawed Film Noir classic!

Film buffs tossed the chilling winter doldrums aside the other night and hot-footed it down to the Castro Theater to catch a Noir City screening of "Gilda" starring effervescent Rita Hayworth.

The atmosphere in the Art Deco movie house was electrically-charged as fans of the B-list genre poured over delightful memorabilia from the 40's era from whence the Noir films were originally coined, sipped on potent cocktails (demon Bourbon, for starters), and strutted their stand-out period threads (sparked up with wide boldly-patterned festive cravats, eye-catching suspenders, and rakish Fedoras).

The two classic films -"Gilda" and "The Money Trap" (both starring gorgeous actress Rita Hayworth and handsome Glenn Ford) - were a big draw.

Obviously, it was the charms of the charismatic twosome, that lured in die-hard fans (who proceeded to pack the exquisitely-decorated revival house no problem).

For the legendary "Rita Hayworth", "Gilda" was a break-out role that cemented her fame in film archives around the globe as one of the great "Love Goddesses" of that (or any other) glittering Hollywood era.

In one mesmerizing show-stopping scene (in which the breathtaking bombshell warbles about the 1906 San Francisco "quake") when "Gilda" breaks out into song - and a spectacular sizzling-hot dance routine - the sultry siren literally brought the house down.

In fact, it was no doubt the dazzling allure of Ms. Hayworth's ravishing beauty - and remarkable acting gifts - that turned her precious-little screen time into a handful of the most memorable moments on celluloid in film history.

Glenn Ford was outstanding, too, but - at times - the awkward-looking lead actor was unable to truly hold his own against Ms. Hayworth's luminous screen persona.

In spite of the fact the movie is often considered a work of perfection by critics and fans alike, "Gilda" is flawed in many respects, though.

Indeed, the direction by Charles Vidor - who was usually a master at the helm - was often downright sloppy.

For example, in one scene Gilda dashes up a grand staircase, then, half-turns to hurl a couple of quips back at her co-star.

Unfortunately, Vidor neglected to advise Ms. Hayworth to take a baby step-or-two up, where the light would have bathed her beautiful face in a more flattering light.

Instead, Gilda was in the shadows, struggling to be acknowledged in a pivotal scene.

In another annoying moment, Ms. Hayworth rolls over on a king-size bed - but, once again - was not given appropriate direction.

Had Ms. Hayworth fallen back a couple of feet - instead of forward - the lighting would have framed her stunning features face - and, subsequently resonated - to capture a lasting screen impression.

At one point, the snafus were so glaring, I had to seriously wonder if the director was "pissed off" with Ms. Hayworth that day - and thus - elected to punish her by rustling up some unflattering shots to steal a moment or two of her glorious day in the sun.

But, upon reflection, I opted to chalk up the slip-shod set-ups, to a lack of skill (and shortcomings) on the part of Mr. Vidor (arising from an amateurish approach at the offset).

After all, it was difficult to block out other celluloid moments where it appeared that Vidor was toying with the effects of light and shadow, with disastrous results in other segments of the flick.

For moi, those stilted scenes literally jarred my artistic sensibilities.

In spite of the aforementioned, Ms. Hayworth managed to upstage everyone in the tight, talented, ensemble cast of stellar actors.

Rita in a nutshell?

Ravishing! Vivacious! Sensational!

When she passed over to spirit, God broke the mold.

Bless that great dame, eh?

Tony Bennett...I Left my Heart in San Francisco! Fundraiser Valentine's Day!

Tony Bennett is jetting into San Francisco next month to croon at a fundraising gig at the Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel on tony Nob Hill to benefit heart research for UCSF.

Though the high-profile event - which includes cocktails, a gourmet dinner, and live stage show - sold out within hours on the heels of the exciting news - fans are hopeful that the engaging performer will sing earlier in the day in the Rotunda at City Hall when Mayor Lee will declare February 14th "Tony Bennett Day".

The remarkable acoustics - which recently elevated a San Francisco Boys Choir concert (at the Mayor's inaugural ceremony) to haunting Angelic heights - may prove to be too tempting a lure (musically and theatrically) for the seasoned pro to pass by.

Of course, the charismatic Bennett is expected to perform his signature tune - drum roll, please - "I left my heart in San Francisco" (which earned him a Grammy award in 1962.

Tony Bennett Duet II is up for consideration this year at the prestigious awards show, too.

Die-hard fans will have the opportunity to catch music collaborations with Lady Gaga, John Mayer, Aretha Franklin, and (the late great) Amy Winehouse on a PBS special to broadcast on Friday.

Viewers at home will probably marvel at the 85-year-old's versatility, musical vision, and depth of range by the time the curtain falls on - what is expected to be - a vastly entertainment live concert!

Golden Globe Awards...Jodie Foster's "Beaver" gets thumbs up! Naughty Ricky at it again!

The red carpet was rolled out, celebrities alighted from sleek limos purring at the curb, and Sir Elton John and the material-girl Madonna traded nasty barbs.

Uh-huh!

There was much to celebrate at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards last weekend in tony Beverly Hills.

In spite of the fact the naughty stand-up comic Ricky Gervais was slapped on the wrist last year for uttering up a smattering of vulgar blue material which triggered an uproar around the face of the globe, the smug "King of Smut" was welcomed back into the fold with open arms to play host for the Foreign Press association again.

The stuffy overdressed Emcee did not disappoint, no Sir!

"The Golden Globes are like the Oscars, but without the esteem," he chortled wickedly, as the elite A-list crowd below the footlights roared (some groaned) their approval.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds 'ya, eh?

One quip must have had Lenny Bruce cackling in his grave.

"I was told not to mention Jody Foster's "Beaver" either," he quipped, after fessing up that he was barred from mentioning Mel Gibson on this year's broadcast after last year's debacle got him into hot water.

Not surprisingly, few of the tabloid news shows were inclined to mention that joke in follow-up news coverage on the heady Golden Globe celebrations, that raged around the country the next day non-stop.

Just maybe, the brass at the Networks were afraid of being hauled up on obscenity charges, or alienating TV viewers?

But, Gervais wasn't alone, when it came to foul language.

When Morgan Freeman trotted up to the podium to accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award, I nearly pooped my pants when he uttered up a salty phrase ("pissed off") when his moment in the sun arrived.

In retrospect, I always thought Mr. Freeman was an educated classy man.

Golly, I guess I got him mixed up with a handful of the characters he has played over the years.

God, for example?

In another "earthy" moment, Kelsie Grammar praised a key player involved with his TV sitcom for "having the balls" to order up several episodes of the series without requiring a prerequisite pilot to test the waters first.

Obviously, the lines between cable, reality TV, and the majors have become blurred!

Personally, I was appalled by all the filthy language throughout.

The Golden Globes should endeavour to entertain in a classy sophisticated way, especially in view of the fact the much-anticipated soiree is broadcast to over 160 countries around the planet.

Instead, it has become the scourge of award show offerings - a dirty joke - in fact.

In the final analysis, the Foreign Press Association came off as a posse of industry hacks, out to sully the image of the industry in the rich broadcast media.

If anything, they represent the seamy underbelly of Hollywood, that undermines the integrity of the business.

Meanwhile, a handful of performers, treated the dazzling event with a lot of deserving dignity and respect.

Angelina Jolie, for instance.

The celebrated beauty turned out in a shimmering designer gown (with a flourish of red framing her graceful neck) - in true red carpet style - worth emulating.

A movie star to the max!

Laura Linney was a breath of fresh air, too - oh, so chic and elegant in a flawless designer gown and swept-up "do" - in spite of the fact she left her "girl next door" persona at home.

The male animal was well represented, too.

Ashton Kutcher (he left his comfie jammies in the laundry basket for a change) and Leonardo DiCaprio both stood out - amidst a scruffy crowd of cheap suits - in fancy threads (top-of-the-line tuxes with elegant accessories to spark up the look) that smacked of Matinee Idol images of yesteryear.

Admittedly, Kutcher's box tie could have benefited from a bit of artful tweaking, though.

In contrast, Johnny Depp came off as an unmade bed in a tux jacket he swam in, which was paired with a sparkly (!) green vest, and open dress shirt with too-wide and too-high floppy collar that flapped in the breeze.

No wonder his marriage is rumored to be on the rocks, eh?

And, isn't it time that Martin Scorcese trimmed those bushy eyebrows which appeared to be roaming around the room full tilt?

You don't suppose he's a long-lost relative of Grouch Marx, do 'ya?

Some impromptu - spontaneous moments off-stage - were quite a giggle for viewers at home, too.

One on-the-ball cameraman caught Dustin Hoffman looking bored whenever an actor was uttering up an acceptance speech on stage.

Was he a spoil sport?

From my perch the ego-maniac appeared to be saying to himself:

"Heh, that should be me up there, dudes!"

Well, you'd think so, with that expression on his face looming large for all to see.

Reese Witherspoon looked positively naked in her ambitious frock sans jewelry.

Was she unable to borrow a pricey eye-catching necklace because the owners at local retailers mistook her for Lindsay Lohan?

And, it was easy to fathom why George Clooney has become "Mr. Popularity" in elite social circles around Tinseltown.

During breaks, he was spied table-hopping, and pressing the flesh of fellow thespians.

He even offered up compliments about Brad Pitt's smooching!

"Pitt's a great kisser," he grinned from ear-to-ear.

In a bold-faced effort to prevent any rumors from taking roost, Brad was quick on the uptake.

"How would George know?"

Meow!

But, the bitch award of the night, went to Sir (Queen?) Elton John.

When the pop crooner was asked about his rival's chances to nab top prize for Best Song (he was competing for) his knee-jerk reaction said it all.

"Madonna doesn't have a f**king chance!"

Ouch!

Year of the Dragon...auspicious lunar year ahead! San Franciscans celebrate joyously!

Colorful dynamic firework displays have been erupting over the city and in the bustling streets the past couple of days - particularly in Chinatown and the financial district in the tony climbs of San Francisco - now that the "Dragon" has roared in to influence the lunar cycle in 2012.

The "Year of the Dragon" is associated with the earthly branch symbol and considered to be the luckiest.

The 15-day Chinese New Year celebration that follows is chock-full of tradition.

For instance, red envelopes with even-numbered amounts of money - the Chinese avoid the number four because it sounds like the word for “death’’ - are gifted to the young and to the elderly alike.

Each day, there is some superstition that requires a ritual, to ward off potentially "evil" spirits.

So far, the ongoing festivities in the picturesque city by the bay have been practical, fanciful, and downright mystical in scope.

For example, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled a "Dragon" stamp on Monday - with a lot of pomp and circumstance (in spite of glaring financial woes which have forced planned shut-downs of a handful of branch outlets around the country) - to commemorate the occasion.

Mayor Ed Lee also attended an awakening of the "Dragon" just yesterday.

Who wants to tempt fate?

On the heels of those high-spirited events, the Management at the Hilton Hotel on Kearny Street was quick to adorn their sumptuous lodgings - a favorite of visitors from the far east - with symbols of the Dragon to attract good fortune their way.

Locals may recall that Mayor Ed Lee also noted in his inaugural speech last week that he intended to draw on the power of the mighty "Dragon" to meet many of the challenges San Franciscans may face this year as the city and its residents pull together and attempt to rise up out of a recession that was hard-hit on the West Coast (and elsewhere).

Unlike the zodiac - where an individual's horoscope sign is determined by the month of their birth - the Chinese fathom up their sign according to the year they were born.

I happen to be a Dragon, so I am looking forward to a successful year ahead, for sure.

Dragons symbolize dominance and ambition and are often strong individuals who are driven to achieve, unafraid of challenges, and willing to take risks.

They’re passionate in the pursuit all their endeavours - and inclined to carry out their plans to the max - in grand style if possible.

Other signs are attracted to Dragons and their colorful (often unique) personalities.

Deep down?

They are loners for obvious reasons.

Individuals are often more successful when they are focused and working fervently alone, than when they are burning the midnight oil at wild soiress at the witching hour, after all.

Oscar Nominations...snubs & surprises! Billy Crystal to host gala event!

Once again the Oscar nominations have been rolled out by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences bright and early at the crack of dawn.

As usual, some of the selections have raised a few eyebrows in show-biz circles.

But, for the most part, the candidates for the coveted prize were pretty much predictable.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt were both a shoe-in for best actor ("Descendants" and "Moneyball" respectively).

Meanwhile, some thought it a crying shame that Kristen Dunst was "shut-out" in view of a captivating performance in "Melancholia".

Critics were a little taken aback that Rooney Mara was given the nod - on the other hand - for best actress in "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo".

I raved about her performance in my own movie review posted a couple of weeks ago.

It was no surprise to moi!

Will Meryl Streep (or Viola Davis) win in the race for best actress?

Although Michael Fassbender gave it his "all" in "Shame", he was snubbed, too.

I guess "big swinging dicks" in Hollywood are a dime-a-dozen these days, eh?

By the way, I am rooting for fellow Canuck - Christopher Plummer - who turned in a marvelous performance in "Beginners" (pictured below).

Some are betting that Michelle Williams will snatch up the Oscar for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.

The Seattle-based java giant - Starbucks - announced yesterday afternoon that the chain is expected to sell beer and wine at over twenty-five new locations by the end of this year.

Locals who frequent coffee-houses in Chicago, Atlanta, and Southern California may soon be sipping on a refreshing glass of bubbly or tossing back an ale if the plans go forward as scheduled.

Starbucks first began serving up the alcoholic beverages in October at a Seattle cafe - where the trend not only flourished - but accounted for brisk sales and a boost in profits.

Uh-huh!

We're catching up to the Europeans - who, 'til now - have savored the image of the sophisticated worldly lot to be the envy of.

In a recent interview, celebrated triple-threat song & dance man - actor Neil Patrick Harris - raised a few eyebrows across the country after musing on his high-profile same-sex relationship.

"I'm not the biggest fan of the word 'partner': It either means that we run a business together or we're cowboys. I've been saying 'better half' ...but it would be nice to say my husband."

Usually a wife refers to her male counterpart in the relationship as 'husband'.

Which begs the question.

Is Neil Patrick Harris the bottom who takes on the feminine role?

David Letterman...utters up last bittersweet tweet!

On Friday night David Letterman fessed up.

Paltry numbers (followers) and a damning writer's block (happens to the best of us) triggered a decision to end his brief love affair with Twitter.

Just weeks ago,Tattler readers may recall, that I reported on Dave's fascination with tweeting and its potential to reach out and touch - well - just about anyone.

Not so fast, Jose!

Because of irreconcilable differences (fellow talk-show hosts ignored his tweets) and on the grounds that his creative well had run dry (Dave found it tough to dredge up witty 14-character-or-less quips) Letterman was forced to admit to his viewing audience that the popular social hub was not his cup of tea.

Uh-huh!

Dave was inclined to recognize that penning Haiku-style quips was not an easy literary task, and, that rustling up a multitude of avid followers was not going to be a quick attainable goal.

Unless you're a sexy hunk like Ashton Kutcher, of course!

So, with a bit of a whimper, Dave fired off his last tweet with little pomp or circumstance.

In a nutshell, the moment was bittersweet.

But, in spite of Dave's failure to garner much attention (or enviable popularity) on the ever-expanding social hub around the globe, there is one accomplishment that they just can't take away from Dave.

Why, it's the top ten list, you betcha!

Noir City...was Dana Andrews gay? "Gilda" & "Maltese Falcon" to screen at Castro Theatre!

Excited film buffs - some in period costumes - dashed into the theatre to snatch up prime orchestra seats, on the mezzanine level vendors flogged Film Noir memorabilia (which sold at a face pace), and Dana Andrews' daughter uttered up some startling revelations about her father.

Noir City - a week-long festival of films of the B-list genre - kicked off over the weekend at the Castro Theatre and underscored the obvious.

Black & White classics from the 40's and 50's have become a staple for American filmgoer and quite the entertaining cinematic experience.

By the way, Noir City is the only Film Festival that donates 100% of its profits to rescue, restore, and preserve endangered films.

"If at-risk films aren't preserved in 35-millimeter in the next two years, it could be too late. Saving films in their original celluloid format is the only way to ensure their survival in any media," host Eddie Muller noted solemnly in a recent press release.

Last night, ticket holders were treated to two films (for the paltry sum of $10) - "Laura" and "Bedalia" - under the auspices of Noir City as a tribute to writer Vera Caspary.

"Laura" is an scintillating tale about a detective (Dana Andrews) who falls in love with a murder victim (Gene Tierney).

The Oscar-winning cinematography, outstanding performances by the ensemble cast of actors, and flawless direction by Otto Preminger still captivate today.

In a Q & A before the screening, Susan Andrews took to the stage and proceeded to share a few intimate thoughts about her father.

For starters, she wondered aloud if Dana Andrews was played both sides of the fence.

"He flirted with his co-star Clifton Webb. If he was gay, I don't know," she confided to the rapt audience hanging on every word.

"My father was incredibly handsome and he knew his power."

Ms. Andrews noted - with a bit of humor - that her father never starred in a film until "Laura" happened along.

"After Laura was released, he always got the girl," she laughed.

And, there was no looking back for Dana Andrews, after that.

Andrews went on to star in a handful of delicious film noir projects.

Years later, Peter Falk allegedly fessed up that he fashioned the look of the "Colombo" character (sporting a fedora and topcoat) after Andrews' detective in "Laura".

What a tribute!

"Bedalia", also on the bill, is a rarer Noir film (starring luminiscent Margaret Lockwood) which was produced in England (and often overlooked by film historians).

Ms. Lockwood's beguiling portrayal of a woman with a hypnotic power over men (and a murky past) is riveting.

Here, Lockwood gives new meaning to the term "Black Widow" in spades!

Tonight, the Castro presents "Gilda" (which is expected to sell-out).

Once this flick hit the big screen, critics - and fans alike - hailed Rita Hayworth as one of Hollywood's greatest "Love Goddesses".

Later in the week, the 1949 production of - The Great Gatsby (starring Alan Ladd) - will probably garner a lot of attention, too.

Fans will undoubtedly storm the theatre later in the week for a screening of The Maltese Falcon as well.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...suspenseful spy thriller! Gary Oldman @ top of game!

During the holiday season, when savvy shoppers were making a beeline for bargain basement sales at local retailers, males of a discerning age were slipping into movie houses to catch the just-released "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy".

The feature, starring Gary Oldman, is based on the best-selling novel by John Le Carre.

The "cold war" spy thriller - in this case, tackled by capable hands - still manages to intrigue despite the fact the material is well-mined territory.

Fans of the genre may recall that in a past incarnation the book was adapted for Television and broadcast in the form of a cliff-hanging popular mini-series (which starred Alec Guinness).

The current release doesn't disappoint.

In fact, there is much for a critic to crow about.

The acting is superb, for starters.

And, the tone and the "look" of the film, directed by Tomas Alfredson?

Mesmerizing!

For good reason.

The filmmakers have conjured up a murky chilling atmosphere that lends itself well to the genre.

One New York Critic labelled it a puzzle within a puzzle.

It's that - and - so much more.

In a nutshell, the plot involves a clandestine cloak-and-dagger search for a "mole" in the upper reaches of British Intelligence (M16).

Gary Oldman turns in a stellar performance as a taciturn investigator out to get his man.

Fans of gadgets will find the technological backdrop - with all its antiquated teletypes, simplistic dial phones, and clunky reel-to-reel tape recorders of the era - fascinating.

To reveal anymore to folks intending to screen it would be criminal.

3 1/2 Stars!

Angie Dickinson...interviewed live @ Castro Theatre tonight!

"Pepper" (that sexy dame who once inhabited television-land's golden nostalgic past) - aka sultry Angie Dickinson - is slated to appear on stage live! tonight at the Castro Theatre in picturesque San Francisco.

The legendary actress - who I met once on the set of the Television Mini-Series "Hollywood Lives" (she gushed that I wasn't exactly chopped liver when I uttered up a flattering comment her way) - is so humble and down-to-earth that she once refused to be profiled on the delightful - "This is Your Life" - in spite of having been tracked down by a posse of persistent staffers on the sound stages at the first reality-style TV show (?) for days.

For some inexplicable reason, Ms. Dickinson elected to throw caution to the wind on this occasion, and bask in the glow of a tribute in her honor in the city by the Bay (where folks often leave their hearts and a wad of cash).

The once-ravishing beauty will be interviewed onstage by Eddie Muller between screenings of "The Killers" and "Point Blank!"

If you pop by the Art Deco movie house tonight, then check out the theatre's calendar; after all, this weekend there is a special festival of "Noir City" film screenings underway worth every penny you pay at the Box Office out-front for.

David Letterman...how to avoid looking short if a guest!

If you're a fan of the "Late Show" with David Letterman - who tunes in faithfully every night just shy of the witching hour - it probably hasn't escaped your attention that guests often appear short when they first saunter onto the stage to greet the talk show host brimming from ear-to-ear.

For the most part, a majority of celebrities caught up in the "diminishing act" aren't aware that the merry prankster is to blame.

For example, if you haven't noticed 'til now - whenever a guest's name is announced over the loudspeakers - Dave is prone to leap up and stride to the edge of the raised platform to welcome the hapless individual to the show.

Letterman has calculated the intro so precisely - that when the "two" meet up at approximately center-stage - he's towering above them on the podium at-the-ready to shake their hand.

At this juncture, both trot back to the seated area (a low-key version of any old rec room in suburban USA) where Dave commences with - what will hopefully be - a probing interview.

For those of you intending (hoping?) to grace the stage of Dave's talk fest in the future, I offer up a tip, if only to enhance your image to folks around the country (who often go by the old Hollywood myth that most actors are midgets - well, as short as Tom Cruise - for starters).

To avoid looking "short" at the top of the show, simply scurry across the stage, step up onto the raised podium in the vicinity aforementioned, and beat Mr. Letterman to the magic "spot".

To get a jump on things, practise at home!

In upcoming posts I'll have a few suggestions on how to sidestep intrusive queries, too (and pull a funny in the process worth writing home about).

A good example?

Years ago when the potentially-scandalous news broke that Marilyn Monroe had posed for a nude spread, frenzied media types hounded the rising young star for all the "sordid" details.

At a press conference, one reporter grilled her mercilessly.

"Marilyn, did you have anything on when you were posing for the photographer?"

"The radio," the sex pot giggled, to a roar of approval from all in attendance.

By injecting a little humor into the mix, Ms. Monroe ended up "on top", instead of bottoming out.

Uh-huh.

There was a lot more going on in that pretty little noggin' of hers than we'll ever know!

Mitt Romney..."Mom Jeans" quote by Julian Ayrs!

At a recent pep rally (do they still call 'em that?) Mitt Romney appeared to be copy-catting (tom-catting, too?) President Barack Obama in subtle calculated ways to muster up votes.

For example, when the going got tough on the podium, Romney casually slipped out of his suit jacket with macho flair (exposing rugged-looking jeans), rolled up the sleeves of his pricey dress shirt, and - once he dug in his heels - proceeded to tackle the issues at hand.

Is Mitt aping Barack's style?

"At least Mitt Romney wasn't wearing 'Mom Jeans'," I howled to my pals in the pundit arena.

You know what they say!

"Don't send in a girlie-girl (as Arnold might snarl) to do a man's job, eh?"

People's Choice Awards...fell flat! Popularity show lacked glamour & style!

When Robert Pattinson (sporting a buzz cut) trotted up onto the stage last night to accept the People's Choice Award for the best film - "Water For Elephants" - he gave the audience a sheepish grin.

"I don't know why I was asked to accept this award on behalf of the filmmakers," he uttered up in so many words.

Of course, that was a difficult statement to swallow from where I sat.

I'd have to hazard a guess that the main reason the flick won was because fans of the young heartthrob (a main character in the Twilight saga series) voted in abundance that way!

The flick was a shoe-in!

This was the "People's Choice Awards", after all, where winning is most-assuredly based on popularity, sex appeal, coolness, and - least of all - talent.

One has only to take a gander at the list of trophy-getters to fathom that one out.

The People's Choice for best reality star?

Kim Kardashian!

Best book adaption for the screen?

Harry Potter!

Best comedy feature?

Bridesmaids!

Essentially, the "People's Choice Awards" is middle-of-the-road and pretty white bread.

Cuba Gooding Jr. hit the nail on the head with his knee-jerk reaction when he spied the list of candidates for best TV sitcom.

"Not one black show on the list," he uttered up in disgust.

The production - by Mark Burnett - was awfully pedestrian, too.

At times, the set designs appeared to lifted right from the studios at "Jeopardy".

Prim. Proper. Rife with the sort-of mundane jazziness that works well on game shows.

But, there were highlights.

Faith Hill turned in a solid heartfelt performance of one of her hits, for example.

And, a sketch at the top of the show - which featured Neil Patrick Harris - was hilarious.

But - OMG - after Adam Sandler snatched up a trophy for Best Comic Actor, he managed to turn in one of the worst performances of his long illustrious film career.

Not funny!

There were some encouraging moments, however.

When two "out" gay personalities snatched up coveted prizes (Ellen DeGeneres for best daytime talk-show host and Neil Patrick Harris for best TV comic actor) it was a sure sign that mainstream America was warming up to the idea (could care less?) of same-sex relationships.

To their disadvantage, though, the producers elected to populate the show with a posse of lesser-known TV actors and an odd assortment of B-list personalities to carry out the festivities.

Subsequently, the "People's" night in the spotlight fell flat and failed to deliver (in the high-energy glitz and glamour department, for starters).

In contrast, Ewan McGregor was a stand-out a presenter with star quality, who elevated the prestige of the show when he presented a special award to Morgan Freeman for Movie Icon of the year.

But, I tell 'ya, the host left a lot to be desired!

No personality! No charisma! No nothing.

The phallic-shaped "People's Choice Award" was pretty, though.

Frankly, I believe the "People" deserved better!

Seton Medical Center...Nurses stiff patients! Administration ignores problem!

You have to wonder who is calling the kettle black when it comes to all that is fair and just in the medical profession at local hospitals and in-take facilities.

In recent days, Nurses have cried foul in respect to low wages and insufficient medical insurance, go figure.

But, when a patient seeks "due compensation", ungrateful selfish medical staff turn a deaf ear.

For example, when patients try to assert their rights - after suffering a loss of personal possessions (such as eyeglasses or dentures due to nurse negligence) - instead of fessing up and making a good-faith effort to reimburse the aggrieved parties they shirk their responsibilities (ethically, morally, and financially).

At issue?

Patients at Seton Medical Center have complained that because of the careless sloppy conduct of Nurses on duty, their eye wear - and dentures, in a couple of instant cases - were tossed into the trash (or, now-and-then, just up and disappeared) while they were laid up in their hospital beds sedated.

After the fact, when they asked for replacements, medical staff gave them the run-around, and basically looked the other way.

Complaints to the Director of Administration also were ignored.

Patients were not even given the courtesy of a reply from anyone at the Daly City Medical facility.

I say, shame!

If nurses - and the medical profession are suffering today - it is obviously karmic payback in my estimation.

Amen!

Mitt Romney...faces uphill battle with Evangelicals in South Carolina! Paul kindly old goat!

Though Mitt Romney roared ahead of the pack last night in the New Hampshire primary - with Ron Paul trailing behind in his political shadow - the White House hopeful may be on the verge of stumbling big-time when the votes are counted on January 21st in South Carolina.

For good reason!

Evangelicals - a mighty voting block - have already stated in no uncertain terms that they are bent on rustling up a candidate that shares their spiritual values!

The fact that Romney is a devout Mormon doesn't bode well for the upstart at all!

As for Ron Paul, well, at times he's perceived as a kindly old "goat" to some (a crackpot with controversial over-the-top libertarian views to a posse of others).

Presidential?

Heck, no!

But, the race is getting mighty interesting, eh?

May the best two-faced liar win.

Oscar...rules change for Documentaries & eligibility!

Documentary filmmakers - at the low end of the production spectrum struggling for recognition - suffered a major setback this weekend.

In a bold-faced effort to curtail an avalanche of documentaries from being submitted for Oscar consideration each year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is in the throes of imposing a new set of criteria for eligility requirements.

According to the proposed new rules, documentaries must be reviewed by a professional film critic at one of two of the major daily newspapers around the country - the New York Times or the Los Angeles Times - before they'll be able to take a shot at the coveted trophy.

Without doubt, the change will hurt the prospects for promising fledgling filmmakers who have qualified previously by paying a small fee to organizations such as DocuWeeks (IDA) to have their projects screened in vital Los Angeles and New York venues in time for consideration by the Academy.

Some theorize that the Academy's shift in gears is based on an underlying desire to focus the spotlight on documentaries that have gone the route of a more traditional (formal) theatrical release.

The specifics of reviews - length, legitimacy, professional requirements - have yet to be hammered out by the Board of Governors.

According to Michael Moore (who supports implementation) the rules are to take effect in the 2013 season.

Documentaries without commercial distribution may be hardest hit by the changes.

Natalie Wood...love triangle put to rest? Death probe ends!

In recent weeks quite a few eyebrows were raised when t was announced that law enforcement had reopened the investigation into the death of Hollywood actress Natalie Wood.

To most, it was a "cold case", a simple matter of an accidental death.

Notwithstanding, amidst a swirl of controversy, officials were inclined to take a second look at the intriguing circumstances around Ms. Wood's untimely demise.

I vividly recall that in the wake of the tragedy, there was a lot of gossip and innuendo floating around Tinseltown.

For example, it was whispered that Robert Wagner, Christopher Walken, and Natalie Wood were involved in a sordid love triangle.

Some theorized that Ms. Wood felt "left out" that fateful night on the yacht - and subsequently - stumbled off in a jealous rage leaving the men in each other's arms.

At this point, Wood - who was obviously emotionally distraught - tripped and fell overboard into the chilly inky dark waters below.

When Natalie called out for help, the two men - hot 'n heavy inside between-the-sheets - mistakenly interpreted her muffled cries for demands that Wagner step outside for a "heart-to-heart".

"She'll calm down," Wagner may have soothed his pal in so many words.

So, they both ignored her pleas.

Later, when the truth about what really happened was revealed, both men were devastated and filled with remorse.

I expect that the recent probe determined if the rumors were true - and, likewise - whether anyone individuals should be held accountable for her death.

If not, the decision to close the case late yesterday, may never put the matter to rest.

London Summer Olympics (2012)...U.S. Volleyball team to sport LOUDMOUTH sportswear!

The spffiest sexiest Volleyball players at the summer Olympics in London later this year are bound to be a posse of studly athletes who hail from the U.S. (and the heady climbs of the West Coast, in particular).

After all, the high-profile sports competitors - who bump and thrust in one of the most dynamic and exciting sports game ever to be included in the summer Olympics line-up - will be sporting a smattering of spritely-colored shorts (and mix-and-match outerwear ensembles) designed by a handful of eclectic fashion-forward wizards at LOUDMOUTH (a Sonoma-based clothes-maker).

Once the boys have turned heads, and they have snatched up a trophy or two, there may be a rush for California "gold" all over again (on both sides of the big pond).

Sovereign Bank...worst U.S. Bank! Bank employee Linda Sheehan lies to consumers!

If you've had the great misfortune to deal with Sovereign Bank, then you probably applaud the Occupy Wall Street protests against Financial Institutions in recent months.

This rinky-dink Bank engages in unethical and dishonest business practices and its employees willingly and knowingly lie to potential account-holders daily.

For instance, disgruntled applicants have reported that after applying for a checking or savings account online at Sovereign's web site, they received an e-mail communication informing them that their account had been approved.

However, when they follow up with a telephone call (as requested) employees - such as Linda Sheehan - give them the run-around in a deceitful ploy to - not only extract confidential personal information - but ferret up data they are not legally entitled to (in violation of their rights).

According to my sources, Linda Sheehan, is the worst offender!

When Ms. Sheehan makes first contact, she engages in a senseless round of phone tag (she hides behind company voice mail for days) in a shameless effort to demean, wear-down, and humiliate potential account-holders.

Then, when she makes direct connection, she proceeds to engage in a lot of silly game-playing to gain the upper hand (which, at times, also borders on the unsound and ludicrous).

Uh-huh!

In spite of the fact she is keenly aware that the credit screening process is flawed at Sovereign, she persists -usually to the dismay and disadvantage - of the consumer.

For example, when Sheehan pulls up a credit account from the customer's credit profile - a car loan or mortgage document - on many occasions the item will be listed under the "parent" company; subsequently, because the consumer had no "direct dealings" with that entity, they will undoubtedly answer the question incorrectly.

In the final analysis?

Sheehan will summarily deny the application (the customer was previously told was approved) in spite of the fact the correct information is at their fingertips (and they are the individual they purport to be!).

In one bizarre twist, Ms. Sheehan actually denied an account, because the individual could not provide her with the name of the sign of the Zodiac he was born under.

Say what?

I know of no Banking Law in the U.S. that requires a citizen or resident be familiar with the arcane arts.

Do you?

I suppose if a Chinese applicant applied applied, they'd be turned down - too - because Sovereign was unfamiliar with the Asian culture (and/or mythical Chinese creatures)!

Theatre of the absurd?

You betcha.

Then, once the individual has jumped through hoops - and been forced to participate in a shoddy horse & pony show - they are informed for the first time that Sovereign doesn't even have a bank branch in their state!

"Direct deposit only," Sheehan snipes in a snotty tone of voice.

The information should have been disclosed and divulged fully at the offset of the interview pursuant to applicable U.S. banking laws.

What happens to the personal information collected illegally during the course of the interview?

Does Sovereign promise to destroy the data collected after-the-fact?

Of course not!

Bottom line?

Avoid these disreputable bankers like the plague!

And, spread the warning to your friends, family, and business associates.

San Francisco Main Public Library...dreaded dragon breath & urine smell needs Royal nod!

Sources informed me that when guests at the premiere for "War Horse" queued up to meet-and-greet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Kate & William) in London over the weekend at a chi chi red carpet soiree, they were handed "mints" to - um - "suck on" to ensure the young Royals were not confronted with any nasty cases of bad breath!

What a delightful idea!

In fact, I think they should implement it at the Main Library in downtown San Francisco, where the ghastly problem is ripe and running rampant daily.

Whew!

Come to think of it, maybe the Librarians should also spritz a little jolt of cologne on each patron as they stroll through the security gates, too, to hide the overwhelming smell of urine and stale booze on their tattered clothing as well.

Maybe then, a visit to the local library will become an enlightening experience once again (instead of the dreaded nightmare it is today).

National Society of Film Critics...names "Melancholia" top flick! Nods to Brad Pitt & Kirsten Dunst!

The prestigious National Society of Film Critics met over the weekend at a chi chi watering hole in New York - Sardi's - and announced their top picks for 2011.

Kirsten Dunst and Brad Pitt were singled out as Best Actress and Best Actor for their roles in "Melancholia" and "Moneyball" respectively.

"Melancholia" was also given the nod for best pic by the film society which is comprised of 58 prominent critics from around the U.S.

Terrence Malick won Best Director for "The Tree of Life".

Fans of Werner Herzog will be delighted to hear that he snapped up the trophy for nonfiction film (Cave of Forgotten Dreams; a favorite at film festivals last year).

Supporting actors - Albert Brooks ("Drive") and Jessica Chastain ("The Tree of Life') - were also given the nod.

Unlike the Golden Globe Awards, selections by the National Society of Film Critics, rarely hint at potential Oscar-winners, but the award is considered an honor in the industry nonetheless.

James Franco...Amazon snaps up Novel! Scandal with disgruntled professsor!

Though there's been a bit of a brouhaha over a recent "stint" at a New York University - and a controversy over allegations levelled at actor James Franco by at least one disgruntled professor - the brewing scandal hasn't managed to tarnish the popularity of the sexy heartthrob (to die-hard fans, at least).

And, publishers?

Well, they appear to be scrambling for a sure thing, you betcha.

For example, it was just announced that Amazon Publishing (New York) has just scooped up -"Palo Alto" - a book of short stories that was released in 2010.

Indeed, the suits at Amazon appear to be having a "love affair" with the young aspiring author.

"It has been a hugely ambitious wild ride," gushed Ed Park, a Senior editor who was responsible for the coup at the publishing house.

"Like James himself, this novel transcends categories," he added as an afterthought.

For Franco, it was just a matter of jumping ships!

Fans may recall that the actor was previously signed with Scribner (and imprint of Simon & Schuster) before he was courted by Amazon.

Let's hope they can read and - that they will subsequently purchase the novelty publication - and at least crack open a page!)

Mayor Ed Lee...dazzling inaugural soiree in spiffy City Hall!

Locals politely waited to be patted down by security, a posse of high-profile luminaries were gracefully escorted to their seats with little ado, and one Major - well, she was literally - booed!

And, in spite of Mayor Ed Lee's promises that the inaugural ceremony would be a low-key affair, handlers made sure His Honor did not descend down the grand staircase in the rotunda at City Hall, 'til he was heralded by six trumpeters!

The guest list was - literally - a "Who's Who" of political smoothies, too, which included the likes of Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom (the former San Francisco Mayor was spotted later in a news clip on the nightly news with crossed leg, flapping hands, and appearing for all-the-world as gay as a goose!), Diane Feinstein sporting a somber pant suit with an unflattering baggy-rear (who was there to administer the Oath of Office), glad-handing Mayor of Los Angeles (beaming in the 1st row alongside speaker of-the-house Nancy Pelosi?), the Honorable Frank Jordan, Mayor Quon (who got booed by upstarts at the back of the room in the back), former Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. (emcee), to name a few.

But, all eyes were on Mayor Ed Lee, without doubt.

In fact, as he approached the podium to speak, all the guests in attendance - not only roared their approval in the standing-room-only packed house - but jumped up spontaneously at one point to give the diminutive politician a standing ovation (if I am not mistaken, he blushed!).

Willie Brown, Jr. was well-received, too.

Trim, beaming, and dapper - as Master of Ceremonies - he seized the golden opportunity to inject a little levity on an occasion that was often prone to - yawn - become a tedious civic task.

Jokes about Mc Hammer - and a schmaltzy reference to his favorite tune (America the Beautiful) - triggered giggles and ripples of applause in the tony climbs of the architecturally-exquisite City Hall.

At one point, Brown slipped up though, and attempted to usher in the Girl's Choir before the "Presentation of the Colors" and the "Pledge of Allegiance" had been carried out - but, no one appeared to notice (or mind) - the snafu.

Such a smoothie, that Willie Brown!

The proceedings continued with a lot of pomp and circumstance.

At one point, when the Military Guard marched by on the landing above with the sunlight majestically streaming down, I half-expected a 21-gun salute!

Of course, the paparazzi went wild, alongside amateur photographers who continually snapped pics throughout the high-energy event.

At one point, a delicate hand actually appeared through an opening in the wall on the balcony where I was perched, with the lens aimed forward of me in a random hit-and-miss position.

Any image of the day for the scrapbook will do - the out-of-sight guest - appeared to be saying!

There was quite a bit of joyous music for the ears, too!

The acoustics in the foyer - for instance - lent themselves well to a performance of "The National Anthem" which was beautifully sung by the Girl's Choir (unfortunately, in contrast, a Hawaiian band got wiped out by the ghostly echoes that swirled all around them as they played on clueless).
As to the precious little songbirds, well, it was as if a chorus of Angels had descended from above to to shower all the guests with a host of heavenly sounds from the Almighty!

The rendition of "America the Beautiful" by the Boy's Choir was the best I've heard yet, too!

Once he had taken his Oath of Office, Mayor Ed Lee strode to the podium and proceeded to note for the record - that he was going to make a daily pledge that any decisions he made would be based on the needs of the residents of San Francisco.

Part 'n Parcel with that promise, the Mayor also vowed to bring about a new "civility" at City Hall, to ensure that his office did not get bogged down in "acrimony".

And, according to Lee, he';s rolling up his sleeves and getting to work right away.

This week, the Mayor and his staff are laying the groundwork to end homelessness in the city (and bring about affordable housing for other residents in San Francisco, too).

Lee is drafting is a ballot measure - to be known as the "Permanent Housing Trust" - to be voted on in the next election in November.

And, "jobs" are a top priority, he stressed without mincing any words at the top of the speech, as he tweeted the message for Twitter followers to peruse.

On the heels of the sly move - the 1st for any San Francisco Mayor - young twitter hot-shots like Ashton Kutcher were quick to spread the news (with re tweets).

Lee's ambitious plans are not only focused on the unprivileged, but on local businesses, too.

"San Francisco is a city for the 100%," he beamed.

"We are in a unique position to capitalize and develop technological ventures," he asserted to everyone in attendance in so many words.

If former Mayor Gavin Newsom was known as the "Green Mayor", Mr. Lee is surely expected to become the "High-tech" one that followed in his footsteps.

"We are going to be the innovation Capitol of the world," he boasted!

When his speech ended, it was only fitting that in the grand finale - a trooper from the hit musical "Beach Blanket Babylon" (Tammy Nelson) - trotted out on stage in an outrageous costume consisting of a red-sequined ball gown and floating replica of the San Francisco skyline a-top her pretty little head.

It brought the house down.

Long live the Mayor (well, for four more years, at least!)

Matt Lauer...pit-bull or interviewer struggling to survive? "The Obamas" says it all!

With a sly smile and welcoming arms, Matt Lauer (if you've paid attention) usually starts off his interviews slow and sure (innocently enough, eh?).

Today, shortly after a guest was settled into the comfy "hot seat" (lured there by a false sense of security?) - the once-charming snake-oil salesman proceeded to go for the jugular.

In a shameless effort to - unnerve the guest, stir up a little controversy, and muster up ratings - do 'ya think?

Just maybe, the normally-congenial easy-going talk-show host, had been given an ultimatum from the suits in the executive suite to overhaul his namby-pamby approach!

Or, has Matt turned into a pit bull - and a die-hard cynic - in one fell swoop?

After catching the segment on the morning show - which featured an interview with an author and her tell-all on "The Obamas" - I am inclined to speculate.

Is Matt going to be unceremoniously tossed out on his sorry ass just like Regis Philbin was in recent days?

He certainly appears to have lived out his usefulness.

One moment he was all ears - drawing out the juicy gossip from the earnest upstart - with glee; the next, Matt was splitting hairs about nuances in the writer's passages which he - gosh, darn it! - swore took "poetic license" too far.

What do you expect from a book on the Commander-in-Chief and the 1st Lady which is based on an upstairs-downstairs back-room-setting account-of-things where the elusive truth has never been researched properly, collaborated by reliable witnesses, or ever pinned-down?

A serious bio?

Hardly, Matt!

Gosh, Mr. Lauer, you wouldn't know a scoop if it jumped up and bit you on the nose!

David Letterman..."Snow Patrol" on Late Show & Live Webcast @ 8 p.m.

In addition to guesting on the regular late show tonight on CBS alongside talk-show host David Letterman, CBS has excitedly announced there will be a "Live on Letterman" webcast concert to be broadcast earlier on in the evening at 8 p.m.

The Multi-platinum - Grammy-nominated (UK band) "Snow Patrol" - joins the growing list of top music artists on the "Live On Letterman" Internet series which recently received a Media Vanguard Award from Advertising Age.

The Glasgow-based, Irish-Scottish band will be performing songs from throughout their musical career, including songs from their forthcoming release "Fallen Empires."

Tune in, and catch it, eh?

Kate Middleton...Happy 30th Birthday! Low-key Royal Celebration!

Gosh, I can't dredge up one memory - or recall - how I spent my 30th "B" Day.

Was I that sloshed in the high-flying 80's???

In contrast, the Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton) will no doubt fondly remember that on the eve she shed-off the "twenty-somethings", she tripped-the-light-fantastic at a red carpet premiere for "War Horse" and rubbed shoulders with the likes of studio mega-mogul Steven Spielberg!

Though there was a light drizzle last night in old foggy London town, neither Kate or William, let it rain on their parade.

Once again, Kate wowed with a mega-watt smile, and a chic wardrobe ensemble that fashionistas were chomping-at-the-bit to copycat.

Uh-huh!

When it comes to actually celebrating the big 3-0, well - according to palace insiders - there are no heady plans to toss a glitzy soiree, kick up chic heels, or partay 'til the wee hours of dawn.

Of course, there will probably be a dozen precious roses (and yummy chocolates?) from her dotting significant other, to symbolize his unfailing love.

And, Royal handlers have also tittered that there may be a precious bauble or two coming Kate's way from QE2 (Elizabetth, silly!) to celebrate the landmark turning point in her young adult life.

From these quarters, she's expected to land on my 10 Best-Dressed List, due out later this week.

Starbucks vs. Peets...social butterfly or status snob?

For those who have frequented two popular cafes - Starbucks and Peet's - the obvious is quite noticeable.

A coffee drinker's personality often dictates where he or she may alight for a jolt of caffeine at the crack of dawn before they head off to work or perform a handful of chores.

Through some keen observance, I have noticed that regulars at Starbucks tend to be a bit uppity, overly-pampered, and status oriented.

At outlets around the city, for example, I have caught sight of fans of the Seattle-based coffee-maker standing solemnly in line (avoiding eye contact) as they obediently wait their turn.

Then, once drink is in hand, the die-hard Starbucks patron usually plunks themselves down at a a laptop (where they commence with "logging in") and proceed to ceremoniously block out the rest of the world (well, the patrons around 'em, for starters).

In the alternative?

On occasion, they haughtily dash out the door with a specialty latte, miniature pastry, and morning paper in hand.

Gosh, was the cafe on fire, or what?

In contrast, the clientele at Peet's usually saunter and slowly engage in a swirl of social activity (chat up total strangers even!) as they head for the barrista where they carefully select their treats for the day.

Uh-huh!

The dudes at Peet's usually swap newspapers, chit-chat and gossip, and even speculate about the weather (at the cafe on Market in the Castro in particular).

At some point - after the satiated patron has sipped on a piping-hot Earl Grey Tea (and probably devoured a scrumptious pastry) they lazily shift their gears and reckon how they'll fill the rest of their day.

Although I am versatile (in more ways than one!) - and manage to float between both engaging realms - I prefer the ambiance at Peets overall to Starbucks any rainy (or sunny) day!

Liza Minnelli said it best in the musical Cabaret in so many words:

"What good is it sitting at home alone in your room?"

Oh, by the way, for those on a budget there is always McDonalds McCafe!

Oakland...No. 5 destination city! Seriously, folks?

When it was announced this past week that Oakland was the No. 5 destination city in the world by the New York Times (uh-huh, staggering thought) jaws dropped around the country and disbelievers shook their heads.

"Was there that much interest in mingling with (and supporting) Occupy Oakland Protesters?" was the thought that crossed the minds of the many around the country.

No, silly!

Actually, the rating by the morning daily, was based on Oakland's other considerable assets - her fine cuisine and dazzling night life!

Gosh, and I always thought that Oakland was a dingy port town, to avoid like the plague (especially in the bewitching after-hours).

Guess I'll have to hop on Bart and check out the strip one Friday night.

At least now that the encampments have been shut down, I won't have to smell urine or trip over a posse of scruffy ne'er-do-wells in pup tents smoking dope!

Mayor Ed Lee...inauguration tomorrow @ San Francisco City Hall!

Amidst a lot of pomp and circumstance, Ed Lee will be inaugurated into office in a public ceremony at City Hall tomorrow (Sunday January 8th).

The Mayor's handlers noted that the event - to be emceed by former Mayor Willie Brown - will feature music and dance with a spotlight on the Chinese, Mexican, Filipino, Hawaiian, Indian, Indonesian, and Peruvian cultures.

The inauguration will be a reflection of San Francisco's people and the City's "world class" nature, according to a press release, which was dispatched from City Hall at the end the week.

Attendees will also be treated to performances by the San Francisco Boys (and Girls) Choir(s), the San Francisco Symphony, and the celebrated Gay Men's Chorus of San Francisco.

Senator Diane Feinstein is slated to administer Lee's oath of office.

In an election held last fall - during Gavin Newson's second term - Mr. Lee beat out several rivals who were competing for the coveted Mayoral post.

Mr. Lee is expected to complete his full four-year term (God willing!).

I was perched at a window seat at Starbucks this morning, sipping on a piping-hot cup of misto, when I was startled by an image that loomed large on the sidewalk on the street outside before me.

An elderly Asian woman trotted by with a pole on her shoulder balancing a large cloth bag on each end!

According to Hugh Jackman's handlers, the sexy hunk has signed on to star in a Broadway production that will zero in on little-known corners of the life of Harry Houdini (the legendary magician).

The much-anticipated entry - slated for the 2013/2014 Theatre season - features a score by talented Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) and a book conjured up by Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network).

The plotline follows an epic battle that allegedly took place between Houdini and a trio of spiritualists who claimed to be able to communicate with those passed over (the dead).

Jack O'Brien (Hairspray) has been hired on to helm the project.

Sounds intriguing, doesn't it?

As usual, Jackman will give it the old "College Try", and then some!

IRS...audits millionaires! Occupy Wall Street protesters cheer?

The Occupy Wall Street protesters must have roared their approval this past week when it was announced that IRS audits of "millionaires" was up by 12.48 percent.

According to sources, the focus on the so-called - 1 percenters - was not triggered by any of the raucous (in-your-face) protests which played-out loudly in the streets around the country in recent weeks, though.

Apparently, the Government watchdog has been zeroing in on the uppercrust for the past three years, at least.

Is the trend expected to continue?

Ali MacGraw..."Love Story" screening & tribute at Castro Theatre!

I vividly recall that fans literally weeped out loud in their seats beneath the footlights at movie theatres around the country when "Love Story" first screened decades ago.

What a tear jerker!

Of course - what has commonly become known as a "chick flick" - launched that old-familiar (but sappy) sentimental phrase:

"Love is never having to say you are sorry"

Overnight, Ali MacGraw (Ryan O'Neal, too) was propelled into the glare of the International spotlight - an "it" girl - who managed to survive her fifteen minutes of fame (in part due to steamy scandalous affairs between-the-sheets with the likes of screen stud Steve McQueen).

Though a recluse in recent years, Ms. MacGraw is slated to appear at a screening of "Love Story" on Valentine's Day, which has turned out to be quite a coup for the Castro Theatre.

On the eve of the return of the classic love story to movie theatres, there will also be a tribute to Ms. MacGraw as well.

To ensure that film buffs get a lot of bang for their buck, management has booked Katya Smirnoff Skyy to warble the theme song as Hollywood hopefuls compete in an Ali MacGraw / Ryan O'Neal look-a-like contest which should be a real hoot!
